Make a prediction and investigate

Record the starting conditions and output. Change one available environmental control, then repeat with the others held fixed.

Controls in the actual lab

  • Light: starts at 50 ; available range 10–100 .
  • CO₂: starts at 1 ; available range 0.2–2 .

A leaf needs light and CO₂ to make sugar. Dim the sun or starve the air and sugar slows.

Discuss the evidence

Identify the condition you changed, the response you measured, and whether another condition could limit the response.

Try it beyond the activity

Explain why increasing one input does not establish that the same increase will always produce the same response.

Learning goal: A leaf needs light and CO₂ to make sugar. Dim the sun or starve the air and sugar slows.

Before you begin: Read the controls for Light, CO₂. Make one prediction before changing a setting.

Check understanding: Ask for one observation, the evidence that supports it, and a question to investigate next.

A simulation simplifies the real world. Explain which conditions stayed fixed; a successful run alone does not demonstrate mastery.
