Make a prediction and investigate

Sketch the initial wave and label a crest and trough. Change one available control and compare the new pattern.

Controls in the actual lab

  • Frequency: starts at 0.8 Hz; available range 0.4–2.4 Hz.
  • Height: starts at 16 ; available range 8–28 .

Frequency is how often the pulse comes. Higher frequency, shorter distance between crests. Amplitude is height — it does not set the spacing.

Discuss the evidence

Distinguish the height of a wave from the spacing between crests. Point to evidence on the display.

Try it beyond the activity

Explain why a taller wave and a wave with closer crests describe different observations.

Learning goal: Frequency is how often the pulse comes. Higher frequency, shorter distance between crests. Amplitude is height — it does not set the spacing.

Before you begin: Read the controls for Frequency, Height. Make one prediction before changing a setting.

Check understanding: Ask for one observation, the evidence that supports it, and a question to investigate next.

A simulation simplifies the real world. Explain which conditions stayed fixed; a successful run alone does not demonstrate mastery.
